Global Growth, Subscriptions, and Platform Maturity – WR #309

This week points to a maturing streaming economy. Music is becoming increasingly global, subscription growth remains solid, and platforms are starting to show financial discipline. At the same time, rights enforcement around AI content continues to intensify.

#1. Multilingual Music Continues to Expand Globally

Spotify highlights the rise of multilingual music consumption, with listeners increasingly embracing songs across languages and regions. Latin, K-pop, Afrobeats, and regional genres are no longer niche but central to global charts. Discovery tools and social platforms are accelerating this shift, making international reach a standard rather than an exception.

#2. U.S. Music Revenue Keeps Climbing

The U.S. recorded music market continues to grow, driven primarily by paid streaming. While the pace has slowed compared to earlier years, the overall market remains strong and stable. Streaming dominates revenue share, with physical and sync contributing incremental growth.

#3. Paid Streaming Subscriptions Reach 106.5M in the U.S.

The number of paid music streaming subscriptions in the U.S. hit 106.5 million in 2025, adding 6.5 million new accounts year over year. This marks the strongest growth since 2022 and confirms that subscriptions remain the core engine of the industry. Even in a more mature market, there is still room for expansion through pricing tiers and family plans.

#4. Sony Pushes for Faster Deepfake Enforcement

Sony Music is calling for quicker removal of AI-generated deepfakes, arguing that current takedown systems are too slow to be effective. As synthetic content becomes more convincing, the company is urging platforms to strengthen detection and enforcement mechanisms to protect artists and rights holders.

#5. Deezer Reaches Profitability

Deezer has reported profitability for 2025, marking a turning point after years of losses. The company attributes this to tighter cost control, a focus on key markets, and improved subscription performance. In a competitive streaming landscape, profitability remains a key differentiator.
